How to Complete Your Onboarding and Get Your First Strategy Recommendation
Investminder's onboarding questionnaire helps you build your investor profile so the platform can recommend an investment strategy that fits your goals, experience, and risk tolerance.
Before you start
- You can access the onboarding questionnaire from the site's homepage.
- To see the full answer, you must be logged in. Once logged in, you can access onboarding at any time; it's not just for new users. However, to simplify the user experience, the questionnaire will appear immediately upon your first login.
Step 1: Access the onboarding questionnaire
You can reach the onboarding questionnaire in two ways:
- When you start: the questionnaire appears immediately when you have neither a portfolio nor a strategy.
- From the account menu: Click your profile avatar in the top-right corner, then select Onboarding from the dropdown menu.
- Direct link: Navigate to
/onboardingin your browser.
The page displays the title Onboarding with the subtitle Start off on the right foot, and a 4-step progress bar at the top of the card:
Situation → Management → Capital → Risk
Tip: You can click any step label in the progress bar to jump directly to that step at any time.
Step 2: Answer the four questions
Each step presents a single question with several radio button options. The Next button remains disabled until you select an answer. Work through each step at your own pace.
Step 1 — Situation
Question: Where are you in building your financial strategy?
Choose the option that best describes your current level:
Option | Best for |
|---|---|
The Explorer | Starting from scratch, building a solid foundation |
The Builder | Already have assets, need a clear structure |
The Optimizer | Have strategies, want to maximize performance |
The Tester | Want to explore strategies without committing capital |
Select your option, then click Next.

Step 2 — Management
Question: What level of commitment do you want to dedicate to this goal?
Option | Best for |
|---|---|
Minimum | Passive approach — a strategy that runs itself with infrequent check-ins |
Active | Hands-on approach — ready to monitor and adjust the strategy regularly |
Select your option, then click Next.

Step 3 — Capital
Question: How much capital do you plan to dedicate to starting this strategy?
Option | Capital range |
|---|---|
The Initial Test | Less than 10,000 (€/$) |
The Solid Start | Between 10,000 and 100,000 (€/$) |
Cruising Speed | Between 100,000 and 1,000,000 (€/$) |
The Project Accelerator | More than 1,000,000 (€/$) |
Select your option, then click Next.

Step 4 — Risk
Question: How would you react if the value of your investment dropped significantly over a short period?
Option | Profile |
|---|---|
Absolute Safety Seeker | Very worried, would look for a quick exit |
Need for Control | Would worry and look to readjust the strategy |
Long-Term Confidence | Would stay focused on the goal without changing course |
Strategic Optimism | Would see it as an opportunity for reinforcement |
Select your option. The Next button becomes Finish — click Finish to submit your answers and see your recommendation.

Step 3: Review your recommendation
After clicking Finish, the card transitions to the Welcome! screen — no page reload occurs. You will see:
- Your recommended strategy — a strategy name, a short description, and a Discover this pre-built strategy button that takes you directly to the strategy's detail page.
- For each of your answers — four recap cards, one per question, each showing the option you selected and a brief explanation of what it means for your investment approach.
- AND NOW? — a section with shortcuts to get started: explore the recommended strategy, connect a portfolio to your broker, or create a new strategy from scratch.
- AND WHY? — a short explanation of how strategies and alerts work together once you link a portfolio.

Note: The recommendation is calculated instantly from your four answers — there is no server call. Different combinations of answers lead to different strategy suggestions.
Step 4: Explore the recommended strategy (optional)
Click Discover this pre-built strategy to open the strategy detail page. There you will find:
- A full description of the strategy's objective, targets, and risk/reward profile
- Historical backtest results (annual returns chart and performance table)
- Variant tabs if applicable (e.g., Standard, PEA, UCITS)
- A Continue with this strategy button to adopt it

You can navigate back to your recommendation at any time by going to Onboarding from your account menu.
Step 5: Save your answers
On the recommendations screen, click Save my answers to store your investor profile. Saving your profile allows Investminder to:
- Display personalized recommendations throughout the app
- Pre-fill relevant settings based on your preferences
Important: Do not click Save my answers if you are just exploring different profiles. Saving replaces any previously saved profile.
Step 6: Start over (optional)
At the bottom of the recommendations screen, click Start Over to reset the questionnaire and answer the four questions again with a different profile.
Tips & best practices
- There are no wrong answers. The questionnaire is a starting point. You can redo it at any time to explore different strategy recommendations.
- Minimum management = passive ETF strategies. If you have limited time, choosing Minimum will typically lead to passive, low-maintenance strategy suggestions.
- Active management = more dynamic strategies. Choosing Active surfaces strategies that may involve more frequent signals and rebalancing.
- Your capital bracket guides diversification advice. Smaller brackets emphasize building an emergency fund first; larger ones suggest broader diversification.
- You can skip saving. Browsing the recommendation and following the strategy link does not commit you to anything — saving is a separate, explicit action.
Frequently asked questions
Can I redo the questionnaire after saving my answers?
Yes. Go to your account menu and select Onboarding at any time. Click Start Over at the bottom of the recommendations screen to reset and re-answer the questions.
Does the questionnaire affect my existing portfolios or strategies?
No. Answering the questionnaire (or even saving your answers) does not modify your existing portfolios, strategies, or settings. It only updates your investor profile used for recommendations.
Why does the recommendation show a specific pre-built strategy?
The recommendation engine matches your four answers against a set of rules to find the best-fitting pre-built strategy. The result is calculated instantly in your browser.
What is a pre-built strategy?
A pre-built strategy (also called a model strategy) is a ready-to-use investment strategy designed by Investminder. It includes defined buy/sell rules, backtest results, and can be adopted with one click. You can find all available models under Strategy > Explore Models.
